What standards does the program follow?
The Coffee Biochar Program follows the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard developed by Carbon Standards International. This is the guideline Biodiversal (C-Sink Manager) uses for the production, processing and applying Biochar in agriculture with small-scale coffee producers.

The Global Artisan C-Sink guarantees that the biomass feedstock is sustainably produced in an artisan way with Kon-Tiki type pyrolysis.
Why are carbon removal projects trustworthy?
In the Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) process, precise and reliable data is essential to confirm that carbon is being effectively sequestered. Digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) technology plays a critical role in achieving this. The tech-enabled systems collect data on Biochar production, feedstock quality, carbon content, and soil application to monitor and verify carbon sequestration levels. This data is gathered in real-time and reported transparently, ensuring that each step meets rigorous environmental standards.
What does each carbon removal project entail?
The decentralized Biochar production involves developing clusters, known as C-Sink Networks, with coffee producers, or C-Sink Farmers. Each cluster is equipped with 12 mobile Kon-Tiki kilns that rotate until they have transformed biomass from the pruning and stumping of approximately 110 hectares of coffee plants.
Value created by Biochar

What value does the program create for coffee communities?

The carbon removal projects work exclusively with smallholder farmers within coffee ecosystems. These communities are among the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. By providing training and support, the program empowers them to contribute to climate change mitigation, restore their farm soils, and improve their livelihoods.

Agronomic

Biochar application enhances soil health, improving water retention, nutrient availability, and overall crop productivity.

Environmental

By equipping farmers with the skills to produce artisanal Biochar, we advance regenerative agriculture, protect the planet through carbon sequestration and emissions reduction.

Social

The program fosters strong community bonds by creating regenerative clusters of coffee-growing families, who are empowered through training in biochar production and regenerative agricultural practices

Economic

By producing Biochar and selling carbon removal credits, coffee communities can generate additional income, which enhances their financial stability and stimulates local economies. This financial empowerment not only improves living standards but also builds resilience within these communities.
